Gila Cliff Dwellings National Monument

National Monument Rd
Silver City ,NM  88061
(575) 536-9461

Description:

Holding the long-abandoned homes of the people known as the Mogollon, Gila Cliff Dwellings National Monument provides a fascinating look into the stories of the culture that once inhabited this region. With archaeological finds dating from 100 CE to 1300 CE, the range of archaeological evidence at this one site displays some amazing technical and cultural advancements. The predominant ruins are the cliff dwellings built between 1270 and 1300 CE, which were then abandoned for an unknown reason. Hiking is by far the predominant activity within the park, but there are also guided tours, fishing streams, a visitor center and great wildlife viewing opportunities. Camping is not offered right in the monument lands, but is available in the surrounding Gila National Forest. Located just north of Silver City, the Gila Hot Springs are also nearby, making this a wonderful destination for the whole family.
